. . . . John TOULMIN 1733 - 180?
The date of birth rests on an
identification with John
(Lond***311176), son of Thomas Toulmin of
Kirkby
Lonsdale, the evidence for which is
discussed in
App.U. The firm evidence about this
ancestor of the
Preston Toulmins begins with his marriage,
29 Dec
1776, Lancaster (St Mary's); MBond
(Lancs.RO, ref.
ARR) gives his occupation as Staymaker and
age as 21
and upwards (bondsmen John himself and
William
Leeming, bookbinder, both of Lancaster, 28
Dec 1776).
Witnesses William Leeming, William Cumpsty
(PR).
Children were baptised at Lancaster from
1777 to 1786,
and he was described as "Tayler"
in 1779.
Probably due to straitened circumstances, John went
to Whittington, near Kirkby Lonsdale, in
1790, and
Milcah, with their son George (then 6),
and expecting
John (born 2 August) was
"removed" by the Churchwarden
& Overseers of the Poor from Lancaster
to join him,
9-10 Jul 1790. Presumably the elder
children (Mary,
12, Margaret, 10, and William, 8) went
with John: Mary
would doubtless by then have been a
perfectly adequate
housekeeper. John is again described as
"staymaker" in
the removal order (QSP2275/15).
The family turn up at Preston in 1793 and 1797 (see
*7,*8); possibly also at Hawes (*6, Census
1851). No
record of John's death and burial has been
found. The
obituary of George Toulmin (*62)(GT ob),
however,
states that "his grandfather [John]
was one of the men
of Dent, Yorkshire, and his grandmother
[Milcah]
being left a widow came to Preston with
her three
lads" (see further quotations under
*3,*4,*6).
Presumably this was a return to Preston
from Dent.
But no records of Toulmins have been found
at Dent (or
Hawes 1780-1800, though 1792 is
missing). The then
Vicar did check the Dent registers in
1978, at MEP's
request, and found no Toulmins; more recently
I have
re-checked Dent burials 1769-1812 and
baptisms from
1763-1806, and had Hawes burials 1750-1812
checked,
without result. Kirby says more specifically "The
family had originated from Dent, near
Sedbergh, in
north Yorkshire", but I suspect this
is based on GT
ob.
Possibly "one of the men of Dent" meant one of the
24 "sidesmen" who have exercised
the Lordship of the
Manor since 1670 (Raistrick, p.184); but
the PR
includes a list of sidesmen as at 16 Aug
1802 and
later swearings (after the baptisms), and
there is no
Toulmin there.

The Monthly Meeting minutes (Lancs.RO

been produced &
read which is to be recorded", but do
not quote any
name or details. Her sons, William (*3)
and John (*6)
were members: see notes on them. For her name, see
Gen.xi.29, xxii.20, etc;
"Milchah" in the marriage
bond, and there are numerous other
variants. Apart
from her niece Milcah Bradshaw (see under
*21, *3), I
know of three other contemporary Milcahs:
Milcah
Stout, bap. 11 Apr 1736, great-niece of
the
autobiographer (Stout, p.280); Milcah
Powley dau. of
George Powley, bap. 12 Apr 1752 at Dent
(IGI per JMH);
and (perhaps a niece of the last?) Milcah
Powley, wife
of Ed. Bainbridge (m. 2 Jan 1802, son
William bap. 10
Dec 1804, Milcah bur. 29 Jan 1809, all in
Dent PR).
The resemblance of the surname (Pooler was
often spelt
Powler) and the association with Dent are
curious at
least.
JMH (quoting PR Lancaster) suggested Milcah might
have been a daughter of Richard Pooler of
Over
Kellett, tailor, Freeman 1748, bur. 22 Apr
1776, who
m. 16 June 1756 Deborah Newby, bur. 6
Dec.1759, and
also had a son James (bur.2 Jan 1774) and
dau. Jane,
bur. 5 May 1776; but this does not fit
with the age 21
in the marriage bond. Over Kellet registers supply
another family that Milcah might have
belonged to:

. . . . : Mary TOULMIN 1777 - ?
. . . . : = Robert SAUL 1771 -
1830
Baptism at Lancaster St Mary, 27 Oct 1777:
Mary
daughter of John and "Amelia"
Toulmin. But the
will of William Toulmin (*3) mentions
"my sister
Mary Saul" and nephews Robert and
Jonathan Saul.
There is no record of a Saul - Toulmin
marriage in
Boyd, but I have assumed the following
record to
relate to Mary's husband:
Friends Register of Burials, Preston (PRO
RG6/249)
When Died not a member
Age Residence Description When Buried Where Buried
29 of 5 Mo: 1830 Robt. Saul 59 Preston

There was also a Robert Saul, Joiner, in
Gt Shawe St
in 1822 (Tulket, p.334), perhaps the
same. The 1841
census could be checked in case Mary was
still living
there.

. . . . : Margaret TOULMIN 1779 - ?
Baptism at Lancaster St Mary, 31 Oct 1779:
Margaret
daughter of John Toulmin (Tayler) and
"Miliham".
. . . . : = John BRADSHAW
m. 5 Oct 1801, by banns, at Cockerham
(PR). The will
of William Toulmin (*3) refers to a nephew
William
Bradshaw;
so it seems probable that this is our
Margaret, though the location is
unexpected.
*21 . . . . : . William BRADSHAW
See above. The will also mentions a (late) niece
Milcah Bradshaw and her daughter Alice Bradshaw,
which
is a little puzzling; perhaps a dau. of
another sister
(*1 or *7) married a nephew of John.
*3
. . . . : William TOULMIN 1781 - 1848
Baptism at Lancaster St Mary, 14 Oct 1781:
William son
of John Toulmin and
"Miliha". Census 1841:
7 June 1841 North Road, Preston
(HO107/499, book 16 folio 9)
William Toulmin (55)m Surgeon Lancashire
[He would still have been under 60 at
census date, and
accordingly entered as 55.]
"Wm. Toulmin, a well-known Quaker minister in the
town, who practised as a surgeon" (GT
ob). He is
mentioned in "Quaker Annals of
Preston and the Fylde,
1653-1900", by Dilworth Abbatt
(Headley, 1931) as one
of two Overseers for Preston in 1837. Records of the
Preston & Fylde Men's Meeting in
Lancs.RO show him
frequently as rep. for Preston &
assigned various
tasks (eg FRP1/3, 14 Jan, 12 Feb 1829).
Earlier, he was apparently a coal dealer, and was
one of a committee of about 30 set up 6
Oct 1828 to
run an Institute, afterwards the Harris
Inst. and
eventually Univ. of Central Lancs (LEP 7
Oct 1994).
Will made 6 Nov 1847: "of Preston, Surgeon". Legacy
to sister Mary Saul; residue equally
between nieces
Alice Ormerod (without control of present
or future
husband) & Margaret Howarth, nephews
Robert Saul,
Jonathan Saul, William Bradshaw; Alice
Bradshaw dau.
of late niece Milcah Bradshaw. [See
comments above on
Sauls & Bradshaws. Alice Ormerod,
apparently married,
might be a dau. of any sister
(*1,*2,*5,*7); Margaret
Howarth, apparently not, would have to be
a dau. of *5
or *7 m. to a Howarth, but I know of no
such
marriage.]
Probate 17 May 1848 gives date of death as 25 April
1848; his executors were both Friends;
under £50.
(Lancs.RO WRW A 1848). "On the 25th
instant, in
Kilshaw-street, Mr. William Toulmin, aged
66.
Deceased was a highly respected member of
the Society
of Friends, and for many years devoted
himself to
medical attendance upon poor people and to
other
benevolent objects" (PG 29 Apr 1848 p.5;
shorter
notice P.Chron. same date). Also noted in the Friends
"Annual Monitor" (1849, p.82),
with the date 25.4.1848
and age 66, but no obit. The age accords
with bap.
date above, and I don't think there is any
doubt it is
the same William.
*4
. . . . : George TOULMIN 1784 - ?
Baptism at Lancaster St Mary, 25 Jan 1784:
George, son
of John Toulmin and
"Milcha". "6 years of
age and
upwards" in the 1790 order.
"George, who subsequently
became a farmer" (GT ob). The family tradition (MEP,
from her mother, born Mary Toulmin
(*6233)) is that he
was a farmer at Broughton, north of
Preston,
supposedly at The Grange, d'Urton Lane;
but I checked
the whole of the parishes of Barton and
Broughton at
the censuses of 1841, 1851, 1861, and 1871
without
finding any Toulmins at all. (I found the
Grange
specifically in the last three: individual
houses were
not identified in 1841.) This suggests that he died
childless before 1841.
. . . . : = Ellen HARRISON
m. 16 Dec 1806 at Preston: "both of
this parish, by
Banns; wit. James & Wm
Hodgkinson" (PR). There seems
a fair probability this is our George.
There are
numerous Harrisons of Preston in the
Society of
Friends registers (notes under * and *3
give reasons
to think some of the family were Quakers).
*5
. . . . : Sarah TOULMIN 1786 - 178?
Baptism at Lancaster St Mary, 26 May 1786,
daughter of
John Toulmin and Milcah (correctly spelt
for once!).
Probably died in infancy, as she is not
mentioned in
the 1790 order (see under *); also not
mentioned in
the will of William Toulmin (*3), 1848.

A chairmaker by trade; always sober & industrious;
assisted by a friend to begin in a small
way to sell
cheese, about 1818 (shortly after Mr
Livesey). (GT
speech).
His trade falling slack, he commenced to
sell smallwares. At the request of a friend named
Ogle, he began to sell cheeses, later
attending
Blackburn, Bolton, and other markets,
eventually
establishing a large business (GT ob).
"The business ... was founded eighty [?] years ago
in Preston by Mr Joseph Livesey and John
Toulmin, who
were succeeeded by their sons Mr Howard
Livesey and
Joseph Toulmin. In the year 1878, Mr [Joseph] Toulmin
and Mr [Howard] Livesey joined partnership,
when the
firm's name became ... Messrs Livesey and
Toulmin. Mr
Livesey resigned in 1885 and Mr Toulmin is
now sole
proprietor." (Sartin, reprinting 1889 booklet:
"eighty" must be an error for
70, and the business was
then at 81 Fishergate. Cf. note under Joseph, *69).
Livesey & Toulmin, established 1816, according to
their brochure (WillT); but that clearly
refers to
Livesey.
"Joseph Livesey had established himself as a
cheese merchant in 1816, and John
Toulmin...followed
suit in 1818" (Kirby). [Joseph Livesey, 1794-1884
"author and worker, pioneer of
temperance, advocate of
moral and social reform, and helper,
friend and
counsellor of the poor" (MI, Preston
Cemetery, quoted
"Advocate", Jan-Mar 1947.)]
A cheesemonger or merchant dealing wholesale in the
great Cheshire cheeses of the county.
Successful, but
during a depression failed in
business. At that time
he had 6 sons and 2 daughters. [This was
apparently
1832-4, as the 3rd daughter, Margaret, was
born in
1835.
Later] the business was getting better and [he]
was able to give the boys and girls a fine
start in
life. (Briggs). (Schofield refers to "11 sons",
clearly an error for 11 children.)
John suffered from typhus & pleurisy for 5 or 6 months
around 1822-3, and was again laid up
around 1828-9 (GT
speech).
There is a possible (but rather puzzling) reference
to him in an "A/c of expenses of John
Toulmin for
apprehension of prisoners":
The Queen on the Prosecution of John Nixon against
Ralf Dickenson.

especial

perseverance,
straightforwardness, and strict
integrity. Mr Toulmin
was a consistent member of the Society of
Friends. He
was in the eighty-first year of his
age." (PG 17 Sep
1870: a surprisingly curt notice, as his
son George
was owner, printer, and publisher of the
paper by
then.)
John is also described as "a member of the Society
of Friends" in WT ob, but I have a
note (source?) that
he only became a member in 1857. GT ob remarks that
though he was a Friend, "the children
were brought up
in connection with the Primitive Methodist
body". His
death was noted in the Friends
"Annual Monitor" (1871,
p.182), with the date 14.9.1870 and age
80, but no
obit.
. . . . : = Ann EMMETT 1792 -

Ann was born 5 June 1792, St Nicholas',
Liverpool
(MEP).
John married Ann at St John's, Preston, 11
June 1810 (PR, no.748). Both "made their mark"
instead of signing.
John's cheese business began with "Mrs Toulmin
standing with a small table in the
Market-place beside
Mrs Livesey, the wife of Joseph Livesey,
retailing
cheese to the market folk". Among
many difficulties
she "bore herself with that bright
and cheerful humour
which ever characterized her ... always
ready to lend
a helping hand to those neighbours who
were in
circumstances worse than her own."
(GT ob).
George
(*62) told this story of beginning work, aged
9:
"My mother appears to have set a rather high value
upon my services, and when for several
weeks I only
brought home 2s. on the Saturday, she
flouted me and
my 'wages' greatly, and ordered me to give
notice. I
did so, and received the unexpected reply,
'Well, thou
can go now' - and I went! On the following Saturday,
however, my wounded pride was somewhat
solaced by my
mother remarking, 'My word, George, though
thy 2s. was
little, it was better than nothing'". (GT speech)
d. aged 74, Preston Jan-Mar 1867 (GRO); I don't
know my source for the date 1866, but it
may be
correct.
William Toulmin has "a horrible painting ...
probably done by an itinerant
portrait-painter in
return for a meal" which may be of
Ann or may be some
other Emmett. On the back is a family history in
pencil which is scarcely legible (WillT).

b. 11 Oct 1813 (Bible); 11 Oct 1813 in a
small cottage
at the top of Feeble-st, Preston (GT
speech). Bapt.
11 June 1815 St John's Preston (JMH).
The "birthday speech" (GT speech) and obituary (GT
ob, partly based on the speech) give a
good idea of
George's life and opinions; the following
summary is
mainly derived from these.
"When a little fellow I went to a Dame School...once
set up in the middle of the room with a
dunce cap, and
at the banquet at Christmas I was elected
King of the
Feast" (GT speech) (there were 2
dames' schools in the
district: see GT ob). He received some
secular as well
as religious instruction in the Old
Primitive
Methodist Sunday School in Lawson-st, and
was a
teacher and secretary (GT ob). After 1859, identified
with Wesleyan Methodist body attending
Lune-st chapel
(GT ob).
1823-1828: Had to go to work 1823, when father was
ill. Started work in a cotton mill (the
Small Factory,
then called Lambert's Bottoms, GT ob) Aug
or Sep 1823
2/- for 70-hr week; soon at Vose's Mill [Vose &
Bleasdale (Tulket)] in Stanley-street, for
3/-, then
for about 4 years at Ainsworth &
Caterall's. About
1828 father was laid up again and George
was taken
away to assist him; he now had afternoons
to spend at
Templeton's Day and Night School in
Cannon-street (cf.
*66). (At 15 gave up cotton for printing -
Schofield)
1829-1836: 30 Mar 1829 bound apprentice to Mr John
Walker, of 1 Church-st (still living in
1883) to learn
trades of "bookselling, bookbinding,
stationery, and
letterpress printing". [Tulket lists John Walker as
an ironmonger rather than a printer.] Remarked to a
friend "Tom, let thee and me try to
make our couduct
of moral excellence equal to that of the
best of men".
Having served his articles, he got
occasional work at
Addison's, worked on County Register, and
was for a
short time with Mr Livesey; opened a small
provision
shop st the top of High-st,
unsuccessfully. (GT ob)
1836-1840: Worked on Bolton Free Press (GT speech),
a Liberal party paper (GT ob); m. 1838
(see below).
GT ob seems to be inaccurate in saying he
m. while in
Preston and went to Bolton when he was
about 28.
1840-1842: Returned to Preston to assist father (GT
speech):
"not very successful, from causes of
scarcely sufficient importance to
narrate".

speech, but
"opposed to my own political
opinions"). Overseer of
The Bolton Chronicle Printing Office
during this
period - see App.T; and JJT has a box
"Presented to G
Toulmin by Employees of the Bolton
Chronicle, October
1859" to mark "upwards of 15
years as manager of that
establishment". [Schofield, following Heywood, claims
he was chief assistant to Joseph Livesey
(see under
*6) when the latter founded Preston
Guardian, 10 Feb
1844, having reached position of printing
overseer on
Bolton Chronicle. This is not hinted at in GT speech;
he was at 13 Falcon St, Little Bolton in
1848 (GRO
*626) and 4 Palace St, Little Bolton in
1854 (GRO
*627) and App.T shows he was at Bolton
throughout
1852-5.
Both Heywood and Schofield also give him 11
sons, which is certainly an error.]
While in Bolton he was a leading member of the
Liberal party, a member of the Bolton
Temperance
Society, and a vice-president of the Band
of Hope (GT
ob).
1859,
15 Oct: With James (*63) took over Preston
Guardian from Livesey for £5500 S.A.V.
(Schofield, GT
speech, GT ob).
1859-1883: Owner of "Preston Guardian" and, from 1866
(Schofield) or 1867 (GT ob),
"Blackburn Times".
1864: At 31 Avenham St, Preston (dir. per DW). Joint
author with James Stephenson of "The
Origin & Success
of Teetotalism" (Brit.Lib. 8435,
b.45).
1872: Erected new offices in Fishergate [demolished
1989] and commenced using Bond-Foster web
printing
machine (GT ob, Heywood).
1880: Health completely broke down; partial recovery.
1882: Took into partnership his 3 sons (*621, *623,
*62B); "George Toulmin and Sons"
(GT ob, Schofield).
1883, 31 Dec: Retired, leaving firm to sons John &
George.
"Meeting at [Corn] Exchange Assembly Rooms:
tea on the tables at 5 o'clock
prompt." Address signed
by 75 employees. (GT speech).
Vice-president of the Provincial Newspaper Society,
a few years before his death (GT ob).
d. about 6.30 pm, 7 Feb 1888 (GT ob).
Interred 10

"Prominent Liberal politician and a life

of the founders of the Sunday School Total
Abstinence
Society, which met at the Lawson-st
School: claimed to
be first Band of Hope. Signed the pledge
on occasion
when Joseph Livesey first preached total
abstinence,
1831, in the Lawson-st chapel (GT ob).
Owned and edited the Preston Guardian and a weekly
called the Blackburn Times; lived on same

Ribblesdale Pl. The PG was of course also

"With the help of his brother and the cordial

sagacity, and principle; swift to perceive
and prompt
to execute ... In all matters in which he
felt he had
the cause of right and justice on his
side, Mr Toulmin
was a stern and intrepid man." (GT
ob).
"Always a warm Liberal ... Not an extremist ... he
recognized that advances must be made on
the basis of
average opinion. He strongly supported the principle
of arbitration for the settlement of
international
differences, and staunchly opposed Jingo
sentiments.
At the same time he had a keen
appreciation of the
Quaker sentiment that if a blow must be
struck it
should be effective. For years on the
North Lancashire
Liberal Executive. No platform orator." (GT ob)

some
confusion is possible. 3 Toulmins b.

He started driving an Austin 7 soon after the first
war, and then an MG. He joined the MG Club and drove
for them, becoming well-known as a race
and rally
driver; but this was always a hobby, his
job being
with the papers. The MG dealers "Toulmin Motors" had
no connection with the family at all, but
were just
exploiting the name (apparently to the
extent of
running an MG in the Brighton speed trials
c.1955
under an assumed Toulmin name). (JJT)
As general manager of the papers he kept the Toulmin
connection unbroken until his death
(Heywood).

Congregational
minister stating "I hold that your
business ought to
preclude you from a seat on the Town
Council. By
universal testimony your trade is
productive of a

Parliament dissolved 25 Nov 1918.
[Ann Toulmin (*62B11) has this book (Dec
1993)]
"An ideal parliamentary representative ... There is
no doubt that at the election of 1918 the
action of
Sir George in accepting the ticket
disappointed many
of his old political friends ... Still,
nobody who
knew Sir George Toulmin believed that he
acted
otherwise than according to the dictates
of his
conscience" (Bury Times). "The ticket" was an
endorsement as a supporter of the
coalition; a
majority of Liberals opposed it, and rebel
Unionists
[Conservatives] stood against coalition
Liberals in
many constituencies (Taylor). Bury was
evidently such
a constituency:
Dec 1918 (32666 electors, inc. 14242 women)
Capt.C.Ainsworth, U 10043
Sir G.Toulmin, Co.L 6862
H.W.Wallace, Lab. 4973
The 1902 by-election was dominated by controversy
over proposals to introduce a tax on
imported corn:
George Toulmin urged the electorate to
show their
opposition by voting for him, and two days
after his
election Sir William Harcourt stirred up
the
controversy by moving an amendment to
remove the tax
(DNB supp. & v. "Gould" in
refs.)
Introduced Sweated Industries Bill (Feb 1908),
drafted by Sir Charles Dilke, which
anticipated and
probably prompted Trade Boards Act of
1909,
introducing Wages Boards [Councils]
(Hansard 21 Feb
1908, col.1196ff; reported 22 July,
question in Lords
26 Oct).
Associated with control of Parliamentary &
Departmental printing and "new
Hansard". Chairman of
committee (?1913) on London traffic. Adviser on
pension schemes during War (SirG ob). "His work in
Parliament was not so much in the oratory
of the House
as behind the scenes" (LDP 22 Jan
1923). Ardent Free
Trader, vice-pres. Free Trade Union; one
of original
members of Preston Reform Club. Knighted
[Kt Bachelor]
6 July 1911. (SirG ob). "Sent to Parliament, where he
was knighted" (Briggs).
Lifelong teetotaller; member of old Preston
Temperance Society; president of Brit.
Temperance
League 1905, etc. "Earnest yet conciliatory
supporter". (SirG ob)
Member of Wesleyan Methodist Ch; trustee,
secretary. Attended St Mary's-st School as scholar,
teacher, superintendent. A moving spirit in the
establishment of Free Church Councils, and
president
of N. Lancs. Federation. (SirG ob). A
well-known
adherent of the Wesleyan church in Preston
(Ruth, 9
May 1981).
Won regard by the kindliness of his disposition,
unaffected charm of his manner and the
sincerity of
his character. At heart intensely serious, but had
humour and often interested his London
friends by
quotation of Lancashire philosophy. Rather
highly-strung and sensitive. (SirG ob)

b. 20 Aug 1815, m. Mrs Busby, no children
(Bible).
bapt. 12 Nov 1815, St John's Preston
(JMH). (Kirby
gives his dates as 1816-1886.)
Started work in a cotton mill (Lambert's Bottoms)
about Sep 1823, when father was ill (GT
speech.)
Became very wealthy (Briggs). James built
a chapel for
his brother William (*66) - see below. MEP
had a note
(source uncertain: perhaps an MI at
Fulwood?); "James
Toulmin of Fulwood d.1886 aged 70; Jane
his wife
d.1872 aged 66". This is clearly *63, though there is
a slight discrepancy in Jane's age. Kirby
describes
him as "of Fulwood".
"He had a grocery and provision shop at 17
Market Place...He was also the proprietor
of the
Patent Candle Company of 13 Lord
St...owned much
property in the town centre. He once purchased the
Shakespeare Inn, in the Strait Shambles,
and as a
teetotaller received great pleasure in
closing down
the old licensed house [re-opened] as a
Coffee House
and used as a clubroom by the Preston
Working Men's
Liberal Association." (Kirby)

clearly as Bushley; in 1851 clearly as
Busby.
(There was a Jas. Busby on the literary staff of the
"Preston Guardian" in Dec 1883,
who signed the
Illuminated Address - see GT speech.)
The informant on James's death certificate (above) was
"James Kendall,
Grandson-in-Law", presumably husband of
a child of one of the Busbys.

1828 when
Michael *68 was baptised - reuse of a dead
child's

only 10 in all:
perhaps one was b. 1825 and d.
immediately.
*66 . . . . : . William TOULMIN 1821 -
1895
b. 15 Nov 1821 (Bible & WT ob). Went to a day school
kept by old Mr Templeton in Cannon-street
(cf. *62),
afterwards to one kept by Mr Smith (a
Quaker) at top
of Gt Avenham-st. Attended Primitive Methodist School
Lawson-st., afterwards Saul-st school,
members of
first Band of Hope (cf. *62). Made his first speech
at temperance meeting at Cock-pit when he
was 14;
frequent speaker at religious, temperance,
and
political meetings. (WT ob)
At 14, went to work for Mr George Penny, boot &
shoemaker, at corner of Lune-st &
Friargate; learned
trade from "Radical Jack" (John
Taylor) (WT ob).
"Shoemaker" (presumably
apprentice) at age 19 (*6,
census 1841).
Considered ministry: preached trial sermon before
Hugh Burns (Primitive Methodist from
Staffs.)
Frequent preacher, a class leader, and
warm temperance
advocate. "Mr Walmesley and others separated from
the rest [of Saul Street Chapel] and went
...afterwards to the Ashmoor-street Free
Gospel
Chapel, which was built for them by the
late Mr James
Toulmin (*63)... For over 50 years, he never missed
Sunday school or chapel, until an accident
a few years
ago, when he was thrown out of a trap in a
collision."
(WT ob)
Chairman of Ward during cotton famine.
Quiet in
his methods, modest in his deportment,
unambitious in
his temper. (WT ob).
William Toulmin, shopkeeper, 106 Friargate (1848,
1849, GRO *663,*664); 48(?) Friargate
(1864, GRO
*668), 148 Friargate (1874, GRO *6613);
William
Toulmin, provision dealer, 148 Friargate
(Dir 1895).
William, provision merchant, of Friargate;
attended
funeral of *62, 1888 (GT ob).
d. at 148 Friargate after long illness, 6 am 25 Aug
1895 (WT ob). "Buried in Preston
cemetery A 216"
(MEP). "Aged 73...of 148 Friargate
Preston" (memorial
card).
"One of the six brothers gave his life to the poor,
and the other five brothers built him a
chapel and
supported it" (Briggs): this must
refer to William.
The 1895 Directory shows the Free Gospel Chapel
between 38 and 100 (the Friendship Tavern)
in Ashmoor
St; but when I visited Preston in 1978 the
whole area
had been flattened for re-development.
"Sometimes called the Reverend William Toulmin... a
farmer from Broughton, but chiefly
remembered as the
minister of Ashmore St Free Gospel Chapel
from its
opening in 1857 until his death"
(Kirby). The "farmer
from Broughton" sounds like a
confusion with his uncle
George (*4).
