For a general introduction and acknowledgements see "The Toulmins of London"
(referred to in this volume as
"Lond.") I repeat a few
points here for convenience.
A list of references for this volume is
included, which largely duplicates that in
Lond.
This volume includes all the Appendices, but the indexes refer only to
the
catalogues in this volume.
The rule for ordering names in this catalogue is that all known
descendants
of one member of the family are given
before his or her siblings. Names are
inset according to the generations. The numbers on the left are allocated
mainly for reference, but also help to
show the structure: the children of each
member of the family are numbered
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,... , in order of
birth if known. Spouses are not allotted numbers of their own, but to avoid
confusion over second marriages the
relevant number is repeated in [...] (see
*623 and [623], for example).
Where I know someone was generally known by a name other than their
first (or
a common abbreviation of it), this is
underlined if it was one of their
baptismal names, or added in brackets if
not. Where a date of birth has been
derived, for instance 1820 from "died
in 1890 aged 70", I have not marked it as
doubtful, though I would not be surprised if
the true date were 1819 or 1821! I
shall always be glad to receive
corrections and any further information about
any branch of the family.
I
have made no attempt to be consistent about the amount of information given:
it is in most cases simply information I
acquired in the course of establishing
the relationships. I have generally either put in all I know
about someone, or
indicated where more can be found -- for
instance, obituaries of *62 George
Toulmin and *66 William Toulmin, listed under GT ob and WT ob in the list of
references.
The main list is a catalogue of the family that settled in Preston,
Lancashire,
about 1800. Catalogues for the related Crane and Emmett families follow the
main
list, and their numbers are preceded by **
and *** to distinguish them from the
Toulmins.
Lond. is a similar catalogue of three largely London families of
Toulmins
(though at least two came there from
Lancashire), and the Preston family is probably
related to the *** family there.
After the detailed catalogues, the headings are repeated in the form of
trees,
with page-references in the right margin
to link it with the main catalogues. The
Appendices contain further information:
notably, in Appendix B about other Toulmins
not yet connected with either the Preston
or the London families, and in Appendix C
about the Lancashire generations of two of
the London families. The Indexes to
this
volume follow the Appendices.
