APPENDIX R.  Fishers, Gornalls, Edelstons, Seeds and Pomfrets

These were evidently all well-known Preston families.  Concerning the first two,

I have noted the following, but have no idea whether they were related to Lydia

Fisher (see *62), Mary Fisher (see **5), and W. Gornall (see *664):

Fisher

Robert Fisher, d.5 July 1794, son of Mary Fisher, d. 30 Jan 1804: epitaph on NE

wall of nave of parish church (Wall's chapel); and a  Fisher family pew (Tulket,

p.58).

Henry Fisher, Bailiff, 1788 (Tulket, p.250)

Henry Fisher, Councillor, 1821 (Tulket, p.213) (perhaps the same?)

William Fisher, farmer (ploughing match, 1815) (Tulket, p.316)

John & Samuel Fisher, linen drapers, Market Place, 1822 (Tulket, p.335)

Gornall

Robert Gornall, Bailiff, 1789 (Tulket, p.250)

Richard Gornall, Registrar at marriage of William Toulmin (*66), 1843

Edelston

I know more about the Edelston family, and in fact have, I think, a complete list

of the descendants of Peter Edelston (or Eddlestone), b.1809, copies of which I have

distributed within the family.  Here I will just note the forebears of Mary

Elizabeth Edelston (see *62B) (largely from TE ob).

 Father: Thomas EDELSTON 1830 - 1899

Eldest son of Peter Edelston (b. 1809 Livesey, nr Blackburn, a noted Chartist) and

Mary Carter (b.1809 Preesall, N Lancs), b. 17 Mar 1830 in Crown-st Preston.

Became a teacher at the Saul-st Sunday school, and here met his wife (see below).

Secretary of the school.  After his marriage, regular attendant at Grimshaw-st

Congregational Ch.; a few years before death took a bench in the Cannon-st

Congregational Ch.

   In 1844, junior clerk to office of E.R. & T.Harris, solicitors; articled free;

admitted solicitor; began own practice in Winckley-st.  In 1883, appointed Official

Receiver in bankruptcy for Preston, Blackburn, & Burnley; resigned shortly before

his death.

   Elected to Town Council (St Peter's) Sep 1866, re-elected Nov 1868, Nov. 1873;

Alderman Dec 1873. Mayor 1892-3, during which Harris Free Library was opened, due to

munificence of Edmund Robert Harris, his old employer.  (Inscription over entrance

records: Opened 26th October 1893...Thomas Edelston, Mayor").

   d. 1.40 pm, 26 Oct 1899 at Penwortham, after some weeks of illness.

 Mother:  Ellen JACKSON 1825 - ?

Daughter of Henry Jackson of Longton (son of John Jackson of Lower Kirkham) and

Elizabeth Southworth (believed to be descended from the Southworths of Samlesbury

Hall). b. 20 Sep 1825 (christened at the ?chapel of Loughton). m. 18 Dec 1858 at

Grimshaw St Chapel, Preston.

Material deposited by Edelston, Carter, & Jones at Lancs.RO (DDX/557) includes

"autobiography of John Jackson of Longton, apprenticeship to woollen draper

1826-28".  The dates, and the Edelston association, suggest this was an elder

brother of Ellen, b.1809, but I've not examined the material.

Seed

Two Seeds m. into the family of William Toulmin (*66).  HPT found a note in the

writing of his father John Pomfret Toulmin (*6617) with the following details:

 Robert Seed b. 28 Oct 1820, d. 11 Oct 1886

             m. Jane ? (b. 30 Dec 1821), 3 Nov 1844, and had issue:

 Thomas        b. 21 Sep 1845

 Amelia Ann    b. 22 Oct 1847, m. John P Toulmin (*661)

 John          b. 14 Aug 1849

 Samuel        b. 11 Jun 1851

 Richard       b.  4 Mar 1853, m. Ann Toulmin (*664)

 Matilda       b.  9 Mar 1855, m. Richard John Prichard

 William James b. 16 Nov 1856

 Robert        b. 21 Mar 1859

The Seeds originated from Kirkham, Lancs, and were printers.  Robert b. 1820 was

Champion Shot of England, and HPT has a picture of him.  A picture of Annie Seed

[ie Amelia Ann] painted by her uncle Thomas Seed is in the Preston Art Gallery.

I note also a Mrs Seed, confectioner, Fishergate (1821, Tulket), and:

Friends Register of Burials, Preston (PRO RG6/249)

When Died                          Age Residence Description                      When Buried       Where Buried

13 of 1st Mo 1831  John Seed       31  Blackburn Shoe Maker                       3 of 2 Mo 1831    Blackburn

Later, note John Seed, who established an Aerated Water manufacture in Kirkham st

W in 1865 and had sons John and William (Sartin, para. and display ad. 5 pages

further on), and James Seed jr, Tea and Coffee Merchants, Market Place 1871-1882 and

then 65 Fishergate (Sartin).

Pomfret

We know of three connections between Pomfrets and Toulmins (abbreviated to P and

T throughout this section):

 a. John P was uncle of George T (*62),

 b. Nancy P married William T (*66),

 c. Sarah T (*612) married a William Jones P.

John P, another cheesemonger (Baines, Lancs. History etc, 1824); "large-hearted

and lovable, the healer of almost all disputes in the Methodist connexion, and a man

of much influence and worth" (GT ob).   John was uncle to George Toulmin (*62, GT

ob), so presumably married either Catherine or Sarah Emmett (***52, ***53). There

was also, in 1822, a W. & J.P, Thread Makers, Lord St, Preston (Tulket, p.343); by

1841, William P of Lord St was a "shopkeeper" (Census, see below), and in 1843

Nancy, daughter of William P of 4 Lord St, "Ragg and Bone Dealer", married William

Toulmin.  Finally a William Jones P had a wife Sarah T.P residing in Worcester,

Mass in 1887 and concerned with the will of *61 (L.Prob): this was certainly *612,

as WBT/ob (1909) names "the late Rev. W.J.Pomfret" as a brother-in-law of *611.

A relationship with the other Pomfrets does not seem too improbable, on

consideration. I don't have a date for John's emigration: all I know is he was in

Preston for the 1841 Census, but I've not found him in 1851.  If he actually left in

1850, Sarah would have been 17, and could well have formed an attachment to, or

already married, a brother of Nancy (who was only 8 years older than Sarah), or a

son of John P.  Here is a tree on these lines (the Toulmin and Emmett bits being

firm but the Pomfret links entirely hypothetical):

James Emmett (1771-?)=Margaret Jones          ? Pomfret

                 _______|_______           _________|________

                 |             |           |                |

John Toulmin=Ann Emmett   Miss Emmett=John Pomfret  William Pomfret=Mary ??Jones

(1790-1870)  (1792-1866)  (Catherine or Sarah?)     (b.c.1780)     | (b.c.1785)

     _______|____________________________               ___________|________

     |                |                 |               |          |       |

John Toulmin   George Toulmin   William Toulmin = Nancy Pomfret    |  Anne Pomfret

(1811-1882)    (1813-1888)      (1821-1895)       (1825-1896)      |  (1830-?)

     |                                                           ??|

Sarah Toulmin                    =                         William Jones Pomfret

(1833-after 1887)                                          (d. before 1909)

We have a little information about William Pomfret's family from the 1841 Census

(HO107/499/13):

Lord St     Wm. Pomfret     60      Shopkeeper

             Mary   "           55

             Nancy  "           15

             Anne   "           10

All born in Lancashire.  (The ages given indicate only that William was 60-64 and

Mary 55-59).  I have not located John Pomfret or William Jones Pomfret in this

census.
