Information
about TOULMINs from trade directories at London Guildhall.
Researched
for and supplied by Edith Meredith.
NOTES
Sections are numbered for reference, each
section representing (more or less
certainly)
one individual Toulmin.
Where anyone can be identified, perhaps
tentatively, in my catalogue, I have
quoted
details from the notes there that bear on the identification. ? indicates a
lack of
direct evidence, ?? a lack of any real evidence at all (ie, a guess).
Selected
entries are quoted in full; repetitions with minor differences indicated by
the
+... following (the one quoted is the fullest, not necessarily the first). I
have
not commented on hangovers like the retention of ***3111367 Abraham in 1822Un
three
years after his death, which are to be expected.
A key to the abbreviations is given after
the list, followed by an index of
street
names and their locations. Where they
differ from modern names, a note is
added
after the directory entry.
"Names of Merchants" 1677, Kent
1736, and others to 1752 contain no Toulmin.
There are no entries in the list from 1844
to 1852.
1.
ABRAHAM TOULMIN *132, b. about 1703, d. before 1 May 1778
The
fact that his son turns up at the same address (2) makes the identification
fairly
safe; Flood's suggestion (p.7) that the son was christened in Hackney in 1738
I
believe to be a mistake. (His sons
William (41),*1321 and Samuel (33),*1322
emigrated
to Hackney and the City, leaving Abram to carry on the business.)
..Surgeons:

[Old
Gravel Lane is now Wapping Lane.]
2. ABRAHAM
(Flood) or ABRAM (Burke) TOULMIN *1325 (bap.9 Jan 1750, d. 1 Nov 1821).
The
dates and the one occurrence of "Abram" seem to identify him fairly
surely,
though
there is no evidence that this one "lived in Southampton St
Bloomsbury"
(Flood:
probably the same confusion that makes Burke refer to *13223 Abraham TOULMIN
as
"Of Southampton St, Bloomsbury, Surgeon"). However, I suspect later entries
refer
to his nephew *13223. Note the
"& sons" in 1817: *13223 had 3 sons, of whom
we know
*132231 and *132235 were surgeons.

modern
vicarage of St Peter's, which appears to coincide with no. 34. None of the
old
houses remains in this area. 156 was across the road but is not clearly marked;
it may
have been on the corner of the modern Chandler St (TQ 3482:8037). This site
is now
occupied by a Health Centre.]
3.
ABRAHAM TOULMIN *132231, 1795-1880 or ABRAHAM TOULMIN *13251
The
former seems much more likely, as he is the only Abraham Toulmin we positively
know
was active then, and he was admitted MRCS 4 Jul 1817 (Med.Dir. 1846); but the
son of
(2) is a possibility. The first entry
is just after the Old Gravel Lane
entries
stop.

ABRAHAM TOULMIN ***3111367, d. 1819 (ME/IGI).
See the
note on Navy Agents following (50). 23
Surrey St was the address for R. and
A.Toulmin; Abraham was living "opposite"
around 1806 (PRO PROB37/355), which should
have
been about no. 18 (London/1813). Was
Hart St another professional address?
Later
at 7 Southampton St (his address is given as "Southampton Street" in
Will
dated
1818), but the business was carried on from Surrey St. This is the Abraham
Toulmin
who d. 1823 in Southampton Street: see (2) above! I can only suppose
"Alexander"
to have been an error (perhaps "Abrm" read as "Alex"). Despite the
1810K
etc entries, the partners were Abraham Toulmin & Richard Copland from 1806.

(15). As
Joseph
Toulmin (21) d. 1847, the "Toulmins" in 1855 were presumably Francis
and
Frederick.

"Henry

the
business." In partnership with his
brother Calvert (9) from 1838. "In

Admiralty
commissioned Henry and Calvert Toulmin to organize a monthly mail service
to
Sydney"; but "by the 1860s P & O had control of Australian
overseas mail" ("The
British
Empire", BBC TV Time-Life Books no. 79, per BC-T). I have a copy of the
agreement,
dated 10 Oct 1843, and subsequent letters relating to it dated 15 Nov &
16 Dec
1844 (per DG); advertisements that appeared in the Times, 18 Nov 1843 (per

JOHN TOULMIN Unidentified: b. about
1760?
Unlike
the other Toulmins listed in 1798 as members of liveries (33, 35, 40), John
really was
a cooper with a small c. He was
apprenticed to Charles Rich, Rotherhithe
on 5
Aug 1777 and made free by him on 7 Feb 1785 (when he registered as mark I T
with a
heart between). John Toulmin of Wapping
Wall in turn took as apprentice
William
Sarginson or Sargeson, on 4 Oct 1785, who was made free by Josh. Sarginson,
not by
John himself, in Dec 1798. (Guildhall
MS5636/2, MS5630.) Listed as Member
of
Livery of Cooper's Company in 1792 London Liverymen (JMH); "abroad"
about 1801-2
(Fothergill). Possible identifications:
a. John Toulmin of Minster, I. of Sheppey m.
Maria Britain of same 5 Aug 1801
(Canterbury Marr. Lic. 1781-1809 per
JMH).
b. John Toulmin bur. OGL 9 Apr 1806.

OLIVER TOULMIN ***311133, 1721 - 1783
Though
there seems to have been some confusion about Oliver Toulmins (see also the
note
under **13218), the identity of this one is certain. The Toulmin & Mohringk
records
cease just when Oliver appears individually, and ME90 notes "Navy agent
with
Thos.
Mohringk Wormwood St London before 1761" (Wormwood St is off Old Broad St
&
T.G.Mohringk,
Wormwood St is still listed as a Navy Agent, separately from
O.Toulmin,
in Kal/1797). See the note on Navy Agents following (50). Though the
Lisle
St address first appears in the year he died, he is described as "of Lisle

in
Burke s.v. "Blencowe" (see Appendix O). His name seems to have been retained
for a
few years.

ROBERT TOULMIN **13213, b. 1717 (Flood,

There
can be no doubt that Robert Toulmin of Gravel Lane was the "prosperous
soapmaker,
whose forebears had lived for many years in Westmoreland", the father of
George
Hoggart Toulmin, b. Southwark, Surrey, Sep. 1754; and the reference to
Westmoreland
gives a strong presumption that he was the son of the Rev. Thomas
Toulmin
of Ravenstonedale, confirmed by the will of his brother John (**13211).
About
1789 the business was taken over by William Toulmin (40), his second son, but
Robert

SAMUEL TOULMIN *1322, bap.31 Jan 1741, d. 15 Aug 1809
Of East
Place Lambeth, Attorney, Common Councillor for Walbrook Ward. I think
all
these
entries must refer to this Samuel (except perhaps the "Toulmin &
Booth" ones
in
1795-6); according to probate of his Will he was "formerly of Walbrook in
the
Parish

Saint

Stevens apparently kept on the name for
a
couple of years after Samuel's death.
Note that a John Dickson was his son-in-law
(husband
of *13222 Sarah Toulmin): possibly a coincidence.

bapt.
25 Nov 1725 (LDS), who married Ann, dau.
of Rev. Sylvester Petty (Flood,

seems a near-certainty for this Samuel; probate of his Will shows he was
"of
the
Strand" before moving to Knightsbridge.
The change of number from 28 to 27,
about
1779, seems to be authentic, as both occur in many directories. I have
ascribed
the 1798 reference to this Samuel as it was clearly not the attorney of
Walbrook,

"of

SARAH TOULMIN *132234 1800 - ?
*132235,
Wilton Toulmin, Asst. Surgeon of the 58th, who died in Ceylon in 1832, left
what
little he had to his sister Miss Sarah Toulmin "of Camberwell ... as she
requires
it the most of my relatives"; and their mother, Mrs Sarah Toulmin, moved
to
Camberwell
from Old Gravel Lane at some date after 1828.
One or both jointly were
probably
running the Academy below. Other Sarah
Toulmins (Miss or Mrs) alive in
1832-3
were:
Sarah Wright 1783 - 1863, widow of (38),
mother of Camilla Toulmin: LLL and
Crosland
seem to rule out the possibility that she ever had an Academy in Albany
Rd,
though she did consider starting a day-school in Clapham Rd about 1826
(Crosland,
p.338).
Sarah Jemima Brodie Harper 1811 - 1889: m.
*132156 Henry Heyman Toulmin (18) only
on 18
Jan 1833, so not "Toulmin" in 1832.
One former Miss Toulmin whose date of death
is unknown:
Sarah Toulmin (*1323), b. 1742, m. Nathaniel
Sergeant. (Most unlikely to be
running
an Academy under her maiden name at the age of 91.)

Toulmin Cattley (**13213338) wrote this short
history in 1896 (Cattley o):
Mr
Robt. Toulmin ... came to "the Soap business" about 1733 as near as
it can be got
at -
the business was then in Gravel Lane Southwark ... Robt. Toulmin was succeeded
in the business
at Gravel Lane by his son William Toulmin who was my grandfather, he
married
a daughter of Mr & Mrs Joseph Barlow & he moved his business to the old
Surrey
house of correction which he bought in 1804. Mr Toulmin left the Soap
business
to his clerk John Anderson & his nephew Joseph Toulmin Barlow who carried
it on
for some years as Barlow & Anderson.
Afterwards (after J.T.Barlows death) my
father
[Stephen Wildman Cattley] put money into the business & then the firm
became
Anderson
& Cattley as now. My brother Mark
succeeded to the business with John
Anderson
& his son John Barker Anderson both of whom were out of the firm as
partners
when I joined my brother Mark in it in Oct 1862.
[1733 is surely too early: Robert was only
16. The story about the "house of
correction"
is plausible: it must have been the Soap Manufactory marked on
London/1813,
between the modern Glasshouse St and Gt Suffolk St (24Dc, Nat.grid
TQ319797);
on London/1747 the site was open ground, so it was not very "old".
London/1813
also marks "The County Goal" (sic) on the site of the modern (1921)
Sessions
House, Newington Causeway, and "King's Bench" between there and Gt Suffolk
St
(site of modern Collinson St): perhaps originally three prisons were built on
the
then outskirts of the Borough. As noted
above, the business was "Toulmin &
Barlow"
1817-1825, so probably JTB was taken into partnership about 10 years before
WT's
death in 1826: "William Toulmin gave up the business to his nephew, Joseph
Toulmin
Barlow and went to live at Croydon" (Cattley h). The telegraphic address on
the
firm's notepaper (Cattley l) in May 1896 was "Cattley's".]

42. WILLIAM
TOULMIN, apothecary & surgeon of Prescot st.
He is
clearly distinct from the last (41).
The details in Wallis distinguish a
William
Toulmin, surgeon, of Prescot St, Goodman Fields, or St Mary Whitechapel
taking
apprentices from 1766 to 1781 and listed as MRCS: he is dated as roughly
1755(?)
- 1813. If he were born about 1730-40,
this would make sense. He left a
Will
proved 17 Jan 1806, and was probably brother of Lt John Toulmin RN: see App.O.
Another rather shadowy William is *134
William Toulmin of Hackney, thought to
have
been a younger brother of *133 Caleb (and hence also of *132 Abraham Toulmin
(1)),
and to have m. Mary Howson in 1758 (Flood, p.5). Possibly two William
Toulmins
have been confused: it is difficult to believe a younger brother of Abraham
Toulmin
was still practising in 1805, while marriage in 1758 would fit better with a
brother
of Lt John Toulmin.

have checked this puzzling entry in the original, and confirm it is exactly as
quoted
here. No Member of Parliament with a
name remotely like Toulmin or Tounlim
is
recorded either in the list in the same edition of Holden or in "History

Parliament:
The Commons 1790-1820" (Secker & Warburg for History of Parliament

probably
the spelling is wrong and the dash may be meant to indicate "Saml."

not identical with (18) despite the profession.

A NOTE

Four,
or perhaps five, of the family seem to have been involved in this business.

ME90
reports ***311133 Oliver as "Navy agent with Thos. Mohringk Wormwood St
London
before
1761" (Wormwood St is off Old Broad St); the term "Navy Agent"
first appears
in the
directories in 1779. Oliver seems to
have taken his son and his nephew
Oliver
into partnership shortly before his death, as the firm are listed as
"Toulmin,
Oliver, Richard & Oliver, navy agents, 37 Crutched Friars" in 1783;
but
they
almost immediately moved to 10 "Listle" St, Leicester Sq
(1783-90). Oliver
snr's
name is retained until 1786, after which "Richard & Oliver" are
listed at 16
Essex
St, Strand. However, Oliver jnr is
also listed separately, though at the
same
address, from 1791; presumably he set up for himself, though his name was
retained
in the old firm. Kal/1797 (p.130) lists
T.G.Mohringk, Wormwood-street and
O.Toulmin,
16 Essex-street as Navy agents .
An unsettled time ensued around the turn of
the century. According to ME90,
***3111363
Oliver was declared bankrupt in Feb 1796, and his name disappears after
1798.
"Richard & Oliver, 16 Essex St" are replaced by "Richard
& Abraham, 23 Surrey
St"
from 1800: this of course is Oliver jnr's brother ***3111367 Abraham. Shortly
after
(1802), Abraham also appears on his own, at 2 Hart St, Bloomsbury; however, in
1806
Abraham was still living in Surrey St, opposite Richard. The firm remains
"Richard
& Abraham" until 1806, and Richard's draft Will of about 1806 refers
to "me
and my
Cousin Mr Ab. Toulmin in the business of Navy Agents".
Richard was "declared lunatic" in
Mar 1807 (JMH, ME90); he had been "unfit for
public
business" for some months, and Abraham had been loooking for a new partner
(PRO
PROB37/355). He found John
Copland: a Chancery order of 15 Aug
1815 (PRO
C33/618
f.1605v) states:
the sd= Richd= Toulmin the Lunatic carrd=

the sd= Abm= Toulmin in Surry St= in the Strand for the space of 10

sd= Abram= Toulmin assumed Mr John
Copland as his ptner= in such buss= &

opened a new set of books ...
(Continued
in C33/625, f.30, 8 Nov 1815 and f.65, 23 Nov 1815.) The listing as
"Toulmin,
Rd. & J.Copland" from 1810-5 must have been an error. (However, Abraham
&
Richard Toulmin, navy agents of Surrey St, are listed in a Bank of England Will
extract
at Soc.Gen. at 19 Oct 1815 as holding £1100 of 3 consols with a William
Pitman
of Andover, Surgeon (JMH): I would assume this was some business left over
from
before 1806.)
Another Chancery suit, Oliver Toulmin v
John Copland, ran from 1819-22 (PRO
C33/672
etc; see index C69); I turned up a few records, but none indicate what it
was
about. PRO C106/72-5 "Toulmin v Copland: Prize lists", dated 1801-16
presumably
bears
on this case. There was also a case
Abraham Toulmin v. Steere 1814-6 (PRO
C33/625
f.114r), and numerous other suits seem to have followed the deaths of
Richard
and Abraham, e.g. Toulmin v. Brown, Anderson, Clarkson. I have not checked
which
Toulmin was involved. See App.B,3f, for
refs. in PRO class C30 (1773-96)
probably
concerning either the business or Oliver's family.
The name "Toulmin" is eventually
dropped from the firm only after 1822, though
Richard
died in 1818 and Abraham in 1819).
"Copland, John, 23 Surrey-street,
Strand"
is still listed as a Navy Agent in the "British Almanac" for 1842.
Meanwhile, however, Abraham was also listed
on his own as a Navy agent at 2 Hart
St
(1802-9) and 7 Southampton st (1819), both in Bloomsbury: perhaps he was
running
a
separate business.
There is a minor mystery about the proving
of Abraham's will in 1819. "Oliver
Toulmin
of Craven Buildings, Drury Lane, navy agent well acquainted with the above,
appeared
personally 25 June 1819" (PRO PROB11/1617 f.352). On the face of it, this
is
***3111363 Oliver re-surfacing after 20 years; but would he not have been
described
as "brother of the above"? I
suspect that it was his and Charlotte
Toulmin's
son, *132112 Oliver Hughes T. 1793-1874, and that he had been in the
business
with his uncle Abraham. If he had the
opportunity to carry it on after
Abraham's
death, he seems to have decided not to take it, but instead set up as a
music
seller, first listed in 1822, and subsequently developing into "professor
&
teacher". Abraham's eldest son, Samuel Simpson
Toulmin, embarked on his legal
career
at about the same time, being articled in 1821.
