Initially, I attempted to sort the data in
App.B, 1a into families, identifying
individuals
with identical Christian names whenever it seemed reasonably possible,
not
aiming at a high probability. Data from
wills and other PRs was then
incorporated,
and I found very little of the original structure needed to be
changed. My one major error (shared by Walker) is
worth noting: it had seemed safe
to
identify Robert in family 1, bap. Bolton-l-S 23. 4.1699, as the father of
Elizabeth,
Hannah, William, Martha, and Thomas bap. Bolton-l-S from 1721 to 1738. I
began
to doubt this when I discovered a Robert Toulmin with a family at Kirkby
Lonsdale
(see family 1b) and buried there, aged 75, on 29 July 1774; but it was only
the
list of Freemen (App.B, 3e) that suggested the alternative, from family 3, now
shown
as the father of Elizabeth etc. A
lesser error was that I initially failed to
identify
Robert Toulmin the husband of Isabel as Robert b.1755 in family 3, who came
to
light rather belatedly owing to his unexpected baptism at Warton; here also the
list of
Freemen was decisive.
For exact dates and some more details, see
the list in App. B, section 1; for
fuller
details of families 1, 1a, 1b see Lond. family ***; for families 2,3 see
Lond.
family **. The small families 4,5 have
not been incorporated into the
catalogues
in Lond.
"Toulmin" is almost always
omitted; very few of those included in the trees,
except
spouses of Toulmins, have other surnames.
"sb" indicates a still-born child
recorded
in the Burials register. : in place of
| indicates illegitimate children.

dates are NS. Letters [a] etc refer to

FAMILY
1 Toulmins of Bolton-le-Sands
The
first 4 generations here mainly predate the earliest Bolton registers and are
derived
from wills, plus the Warton PR for the family of Richard (d.1689). See

for details. Robert at the head may
have been brother of Richard at the
head of
family 3.

[a] See under Lond***311179.
[b] Admon 1788 names Elisabeth Toulmin, widow
& William Toulmin, shoemaker.
William
was evidently Simon's brother.
[c] "of Lancaster" in 1820 (Sarah's
burial), so must be the Robert Toulmin
commemorated
there: see App.B, 5a (Lancaster), Lond***3111793.
[d]
The dates strongly suggest this was the Richard "of
Torrisholme" bur. at
Halton
in 1825 (see App.B, 5a (Halton)): so both brothers settled in the
Lancaster
area.
[e]
William & Hannah emigrated to Liverpool, presumably after 1788 when
William

"of K.Lonsdale": see App.B, 5c (Liverpool), Lond***311177. William's will
(1794)
refers to brothers Thomas and John & sister Sarah Halton.

Certainly alive in 1794, by [e]; probably in 1799, when a John Toulmin
witnessed
marriage of Robert to Sarah Whitehead.

Notes
[a] Presumably the "Thomas Toulmin,
Boulton by the Sands" listed in 1696 (Oaths).
I think
it likely he was eldest son of George Toulmin (d.1689) of family 3; but
there
is no positive evidence for this.
However, I have assumed it in listing him
as
Lond**131, under which more details of all the above will be found.
[b] No record of b. or bap., but see under
Lond**1312.
[c] The 3 Marthas are rather confusing, and
I'm not sure the one shown as b.1726
existed! See notes under Lond**1316, 13115, 13132.
FAMILY
3 The Toulmins of Bolton Holmes
The
first 3 generations are based on the three wills and admon indicated, the
document
"t" of App.B section 1a:
"Thomas Toulmin died in 1638 [OS],
leaving a son John, aged 18. Their
tenements
were held of the king as Duke"
and
Warton and Lancaster registers cited in App.B section 1a as "W" and
"L".
I have assumed, as a probability, that the
brother George in the will of John
d.1641
was George of Bolton Holmes and Sandside in the Bolton-l-S registers, whence
the
rest. More details are given under
Lond**, though the allocation of the Rev.
Thomas
Toulmin of Ravenstonedale to this family is very uncertain (see note [b]).

* indicates Freemen of Lancaster (see App.B,
3e).
[a] Richard's will mentions "Robert
Towlmyne my brother", who may well have been
the
Robert at the head of family 1, and a Christopher Towlmyne, relationship not
stated.
[b] Possibilities are Thomas (head of family
2), Edmund (d.1691, family 4), and
perhaps
a John who was father of the Rev. Thomas Toulmin of Ravenstonedale. This
John is
hypothesized as Lond**132: see the discussion there. "Hannah Toulmin of
Boulton
Holmes", d.1695, may have been an unmarried daughter, or a sister, of
George.
[c] No record of birth of Joseph or John:
bur. as sons of Joshua. Perhaps born
earlier
and not baptised before they died.
[e] "a child" in register:
identified as Robert Toulmin father of William b.1728
and son
of Joshua from roll of Freemen (App.B, 3e).
Innkeeper at Bolton-l-S.
[f] James b.1770 settled in Bentham;
catalogued as Lond**133336, which see for
details
of his family.
[g] Roger, catalogued as Lond**133352, became
a draper in London.
[h] Robert (Lond**133331), a weaver, had
children bap. Wray, Bolton-l-S, and
Silverdale
before settling in Kirkby Lonsdale about 1790; perhaps moved to Bentham
area
with his son Thomas about 1800.
Children (except William) reg. as "of Robert
and
Isabel[la]".
[i] All children bap. Bentham. Apparently Robert, John, and Thomas (at
least) had
all
moved back to Bolton-l-S by 1830; Robert, John, Thomas, and James to
Burton-in-Kendal
by 1834-41; and Robert to Lancaster about 1850. This branch of the
family
seems to have been very mobile. For
marriages & next generation see under
Lond**13333122,3,5,6.

Notes
[a] See note in App.B, 5a (Slyne) on Edmund's
will: there is a lot of guesswork
here. Other possibilities for the father of the
later Edmund are John Toulmin of
Slyne,
d.1662 (family 5), or George Toulmin of Bolton Holmes, d.1689 (family 3).
[b] Note also "Elizabeth Toulmin of
Slyne", bur. Bolton-l-S 1 Sep 1729: probably
bap.
before the Bolton PR starts in 1655, so perhaps a sister of this Edmund.
Alternatively,
she may have been a dau. of John and Elizabeth in family 5.
[c] Presumably the "Thomas Toulmin,
Slyne cum Hest" listed in 1696 (Oaths).
He may
have
had a younger brother Edmund: inscr. "ET 1699" at 7 Main Road,
Bolton-l-S
(SD486685)
"initials not common, should be Edmund Toulmin" (Garnett,22). None of
those
above were living in 1699, and the one b.1689 in family 3 was too young.
[d] For the marriage, see App.B, 3a (Marriage
Bonds). Perhaps Ellen was related to
the
Drinkall family of Over Wyresdale: established by 1336, still farming in
Wyresdale
(Garnett,198,200,205).
[e] See App.B, 5b (Ingleton), for the
marriages and family of this Edmund.

AFTERTHOUGHTS
a. Are we getting near the point where
(supposedly) one Toulmin settled in the
area? Families 2 and 4 could easily be linked to
the others. Clearly Robert at the
head of
family 1 and Richard at the head of family 3 are distinct, but it would be
quite
possible for them to be brothers (and Richard's will does mention a brother
Robert):
neither Richard d.1623 nor John d.1638 could be expected to mention cousins
in
their wills. William Toulminge, bur.
Lancaster 1620, could have been another
brother,
and most of the other early entries in Lancaster PR his family. (I have a
note,
source uncertain, of a William Toulmin, surely the same, who left a will, ref.
K 1620
Sept, but I have not been able to confirm this: perhaps I confused it with
the
burial record.)
b. If there was a Toulmin who arrived between
1560 and 1580, and had sons Robert,
Richard,
and William, could he have been closely related to the founder of the
London
branch of the family, Abraham Toulmin b. at Chard in 1580 ? It looks as if
we
should have to go at least a generation further back, and suppose a brother of
our
initial northern Toulmin settled in Somerset and started the family there. This
might
not be inconsistent with Cussans's story of the flight of a protestant Toulmin
family
from Holland at the time of the Spanish persecution (Philip II established
the
Inquisition there in 1566, and that was about the date of massive emigration).
However,
Richard (d.1607) states that his ancestors were buried at Bolton-l-S,
which
seems to push the date of settlement back to early 16th century at latest.
c. The tendency for the eldest son to be
named after his grandfather is very
noticeable,
and it may be worth quoting the statistics on this. Taking the trees as
given
above (which admittedly have in some cases been influenced by this tendency),
in 14
cases out of 28, the eldest son was named after his father's father; in 4 of
the
exceptional cases, the father and grandfather had the same name, so perhaps a
run of
three was avoided (not one such occurs).
In some of the other 10 cases, the
identification
of the eldest son is uncertain.
d. The age (of men) at marriage is also of
interest. Counting first marriages
only
(and calculating age as year of marriage minus year of baptism) it ranges from
17 to
45, with the following distribution:
under 20 2
20-24 5
25-29 10
30-34 9
35-39 3
40-45 2
Total 31
