APPENDIX B.  A few other Toulmins.

This Appendix is rather a rag-bag of miscellaneous information collected at

different times; I have checked and re-checked a good deal, but some of it still

depends on hasty notes. Isolated references to known members of the Preston family

are under the main Notes; references within lists have been left in place, with the

*... reference added.  References to known members of the London families are

usually similarly marked Lond*... referring to my list of that family (abbreviated

to L*... in section 2a and omitted in 2b, 4, or (before about 1800) referred to

the trees in App.C.  My comments, for instance on MEP's and WillT's data, or

subsequent comments on my own notes, are in [].

1a. COMBINED TABLE TO 1740

I started with a list of all the Toulmins from PR Bolton-l-S, 1655-1735 (LPRS

42), and Lancaster 1599-1690 (LPRS 32), noted down by William Toulmin in the

Bodleian Library when he was an Oxford undergraduate.   I re-arranged these into

date order, standardized names, and somewhat condensed the entries, and have since

included entries for other parishes in the area, as indicated below, and a few more

wills.  I checked many items in the LPRS volumes, in particular all those where

there was a doubt over OS/NS dates.

The surname is omitted: for a summary of the variants see Appendix I. Names of

marriage partners are bracketed. In records marked B, "of Bolton" is also omitted,

but other places of residence are quoted.  I have presumed a burial was of a child

if the entry is "... son of" or "... dau. of" etc.

The numbers in the penultimate column indicate the grouping into 5 families

(probably all related) shown in Appendix C: some of these are more or less

speculative.  (1a, 1b are entered here as 1: they can be distinguished by the

sources H and K respectively.)  For all items marked 1, 2, 3 the PR entries (or

other source) are given more fully under Lond***..., Lond**131..., Lond**...

respectively; however, it seemed worth presenting the table to show the raw material

that I derived the grouping from.

The letters in the last column show the source (PR and Lancs. except where

otherwise stated):

      B    Bolton-l-S, 1655-1735 (LPRS 42) (+ two later entries from section 1b)

      C    Cartmel, 1559-1661 (LPRS 28,96)

      H    Halton, 1592-1837 (LPRS 44, 126)

K    Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmoreland, 1695-1820 (see section 1c)

      L    Lancaster, 1599-1786 (LPRS 32, 57, 88)

      T    Tatham, 1558-1837 (LPRS 59)

      W    Warton, 1568-1812 (LPRS 73)

      X    Kirkham 1539-1653 (LPRS 83)

b    Boyd's Lancashire Marriage Index: see section 3a.

      t    Towneley ms quoted Vict.CH 136 note 49: see London**1.

w    Lancs wills proved at Richmond (vol.X, XIII): see section 4a.

x    Chetham Soc. Vol.lviii [per WillT, who adds "XXVI"]

+    Printed Marriage Bond: see section 3a.

Where a will or marriage bond can clearly be identified with a PR entry, both are

shown on one line, with the PR date.

1c. KIRKBY LONSDALE REGISTERS

When MEP long ago ran the 1790 baptism of **6 to earth at Kirkby Lonsdale, she

also noted several other Toulmin entries around that date, for which I have

photo-copies of the BT pages.  I eventually got round to a systematic check of the

original PR (in Cumbria RO, Kendal) from 1695 to 1820 (I did not check the BT).  All

the entries appear to relate to members of families 1a, 1b, and 3 of App.C, and are

quoted under Lond**, Lond***.  As the registers have not been published I again list

the Toulmin entries I found here:

WPR 19/2 (1651-1750), checked from Jan 1695/6.  No Toulmin entries before 1722.

 Notes:

 a. Transcripts of registers at chapels of Firbank, Killington, Middleton, Mansergh,

Barbon, Hutton Roof are progressively included.

 b. The relevant points in the trees for families 1a and 3 in App.C are marked with

a note [k]; but all of the tree for 1b is relevant (though a few events included

occurred elsewhere).

1d. MISCELLANEOUS PARISH REGISTER ENTRIES

I have checked the indexes of all LPRS volumes 1-133 (except 95, 107, 111 which

were not available at Lancs.RO at the time).  Toulmins (variously spelt) occur in

the following:

Bentham, Yorks. 1666-1812 (LPRS 69), and later: see section 5b.

 Bolton-le-Sands 1655-1736 (LPRS 42): see section 1a.

 Cartmel Priory 1559-1661 (LPRS 28): see section 1a (1641, 1646).

               (1662-1723, LPRS 96, produced none)

Colton (LPRS 133): Charlotte Toulmin, perhaps Lond**13211, wit. m. there 1821.

 Gressingham 1680-1812 (LPRS 59): see App.C, family 1a, note [b].

 Halton 1592-1837 (LPRS 44, 126): see sections 1a,

Heaton Norris (LPRS 121): see scection 5c (under Manchester)

 Hornby 1742-1789 (LPRS 59): see App.C, family 3, Anne b.1777 (Lond**1333311).

Ingleton, Yorks. 1607-1812 (LPRS 71): see section 5b.

 Kirkham 1539-1653 (LPRS 83): see section 1a (1601) and 5c.

 Lancaster 1599-1690 (LPRS 32), 1691-1786 (LPRS 57, 88) and mar. 1754-? (LPRS 133):

see sections 1a, 5a.

Over Kellet 1652-1812 (LPRS 42): an unidentified John Toulmin witnessed a m. in

1768, and see under Lond***3111412 and the note on Poolers under * in this volume.

 Tatham 1558-1837 (LPRS 59): see section 1a (1715)

Thornton, Yorks. 1576-1812 (LPRS 67): see section 5b (Ingleton, b(6)).

 Walton-le-Dale 1609-1812 (LPRS 37): see section 5c (Preston).

 Warton 1568-1812 (LPRS 73): see sections 1a, 5a.

Also indexes in other printed registers in Cumbria RO, Kendal:

Penrith (vol. IV of printed set): only 1765 m. noted under 1c above.

Ravenstonedale (ed. Metcalf, Kendal 1893): not indexed but I checked bap. 1670-

1770, mar. 1670-1770, bur. 1670-1800.  See section 2a & under Lond**1321.

Sedbergh 1594-1800 (pub. Sedbergh 1912): no Toulmin

Ulverston 1545-1812 (Bardsley & Ayre): see section 5b.

I also checked a few unpublished PRs in the area, mainly in the attempt to find

the burial of John Toulmin (*):

Beetham, Westmoreland: see section 5b. [An unusually interesting register, as the

vicar included comments on the weather, whirlwinds, floods, etc.]

 Burton-in-Kendal (Cumbria RO WPR/10/1,2): checked bap. 1670-1725, mar. 1690-1710,

bur. 1666-1809.  See note on Hoggarts of Holme, App.Q.

 Cockerham (BT Lancs.RO DRB2/154-5): spot-check only for Bradshaw-Toulmin marr.

1801, see *2.

Dent, Yorks. (bur. 1769-1812, bap. 1763-1806): see note under * in catalogue.

Hawes, Yorks. (1780-1800, bur. 1750-1812): see note under * in catalogue.

Leck (Lancs.RO PR 3323): no Toulmin bur. 1800-1825.

 Melling (BT, Lancs.RO DRB2/162-5): no Toulmin 1795-1818.

 Poulton-le-Sands: see section 5a (Morecambe).

Preston (Lancs.RO PR1446): no Toulmin bur. 1800-1807, but much is unreadable.  I

did not try the BT.

 Whittington (Lancs.RO PR3335): no Toulmin bur. 1797-1812.

[The printed PR, 1538-1764 (LPRS 3) has no Toulmin indexed.]

Section 2. IGI Index

2a. NORTHERN COUNTIES

     County: C=Cumberland, L=Lancashire, W=Westmorland, Y=Yorkshire, - = London.

Most of these records were originally noted from microfiche at SGen on a visit in

1978, and were complete for C, W, a selection only for L, Y.  I rechecked L and W at

Lancs.RO in 1993, without finding anything of fresh interest, and later made a

complete listing (from the microfiche as at Mar 1992) for Y.  Some records supplied

by JMH (noted "j" after county) include information apparently not in IGI records,

presumably from PR (two burial records are not in IGI at all).

Comments: B=section in this Appendix; C=App.C family no.; L...= ref. in Lond.

(The catalogue reference is not included if I think the App.C reference is adequate

for identification.)

Dates marked * are probably OS, ie should be 1 year later, and have been ordered

accordingly; where I've checked I give dates in dual form as usual.  I have usually

regularized spelling of Christian names and places.

A few London entries have been added, between 1693 and 1701, because of the

possible link between two Cornelius Toulmins (JMH).  Between 1741 and 1811 I have

omitted 2 Ingleton and 9 Bentham records from the Y list, all of which are listed

from PRs in section 5b.

2b. LONDON AREA

BC-T sent me a listing (and disc) of "IGI entries for the London & Surrey areas

not listed in family history records at Feb.1993", containing 249 items (baptisms &

marriages).  Following is an edited version of this, deleting Tal-, Tol- variants

from 1800 on, which are numerous but seem unlikely to be of any interest in

connection with the Toulmin families, except for 4 "Toleman" bap. 1805-11 noted in

App.D,36.  I have not edited dates, and those marked * may be OS.

My identification or comments on the right.  Identifications *... refer to the

Lond. catalogues;  but 5b refers to section 5b in this Appendix, etc.

2c. HERTFORDSHIRE

I have photocopies of two pages of the IGI 1992 edition covering Tolman &c.

Besides numerous Tolmans (as in London, see 2b. above), none of whom seems likely to

be related to any Toulmins, these include:

 i.   m. at Braughing of *132113 & bap. of all his children

ii.  bap. at St Albans, St Michael of *13215622-6 and *13215632

iii. Three interesting entries, evidently referring to *132, *1321, *132156 (though

1731 for William's birth is too early and Henry is dreadfully muddled):

Toulmin, Abraham      spouse    Mary Wilton                 b. abt 1705

Toulmin, William      [parents] Abraham Toulmin/Mary Wilton b. abt 1731

Toulmin, Henry Hayman [parents] Abraham Toulmin/Mary Wilton b. 18 Jan 1733

There is also an entry on a later page (per JMH, who drew my attention to these

entries)

Wilton, Mary          [parents] William Wilton/Esther       b. abt 1709

All four entries have "Rickmansworth" given under "Town, parish" and all are listed

as "pre-1970  0453982  film", with dates in Sep 1964 in cols. B, E.  Despite the

obvious errors, it would be interesting to know the source of the (plausible) dates

1705, 1709 and of the parentage of Mary (not in Burke).  I checked the Rickmansworth

PR bap. 1700-20 and m. 1723-53 without finding any Toulmin or Wilton. Further

details from LDS show  the "submitter" as Lilian Harding Kingston, of whom I know

nothing (no address is available).

3a. LANCASHIRE MARRIAGES

Boyd's Lancashire Marriage Index

Copies of this are available in Lancs.RO (last volumes on microfiche only),

SGen, and doubtless elsewhere. For some parishes it covers a substantially longer

period than either LPRS or IGI.  I checked the whole index for Toulmins (but one or

two oddly spelt ones may have eluded me), noting 34 entries in the male section and

37 in the female.  All these marriages are included either in the catalogues in this

volume or Lond., or in this Appendix, usually with the actual register entry.  I

only quote Boyd if I have not looked up (or failed to find) the register entry, or

there is a discrepancy of date.

Marriage Bonds, from Lancs. & Ches. Record Soc. vol. 74,75,80,81,100,115

The following list contains all 18 entries I noted in these volumes; most are

quoted in full in the catalogue references cited.  Note that later marriage bonds,

though not printed, are available in Lancs.RO under reference ARR (eg John Toulmin &

Milcah Pooler, 1776, quoted under *6).

1705/6 Jan 31 Thomas Tolmine husbandman & Ellen Drinkell, both of Sline.  Bdmn:

[Mar. reg. Lancaster Jul 17 "Robert Cottam, Susan Tolmin, both of Stalmin  Lic:"

Tentatively identified as Susannah b.1717 in App.B family 4; but I do not know why

she should have been "of Stalmine" (SD3745, 12 ml SW of Lancaster). There are no

Toulmins in the PR there down to 1724 (LPRS 51).]

"Great index"

This index consisted of very brief items on small index-cards, without any

indication of the source.  At the time I checked it (1978) I was mainly concerned

with tracing John Toulmin b.1790, and stopped listing purely London references after

(in alphabetic order) Edmund.

1728 (Apr 1) Abraham Toulmin of St John Wapping m. Ann Wilton of St Paul Shadwell.

3c. QUAKER INDEXES.  I also checked the index of Quaker registers at Friends' House,

London, for all of Lancs, Yorks, and Westmoreland, finding nothing except the

entries for Milcah (d.1820) and Margaret Toulmin (*6A, b.1835).  I later (at PRO)

found that Index to Friends "Annual Monitor" includes deaths of William (*3) and

John (*6) - no other Toulmins.

3d. GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE (Family Records Centre, formely at St Catherine's House)

On various occasions I've checked a considerable range of the quarterly indexes,

and noted all the Toulmins and Toulmans occurring.  (I have occasionally noted, but

do not include here, Tolmans.)  For individuals included in my catalogues or

mentioned under various headings in this appendix, the references have almost always

been included, eg "b. Ware Oct-Dec 1838 (GRO)"; others are included in the

geographical section 5 below.  Not listed elsewhere are the following (A,B,C,D

3e. FREEMEN OF LANCASTER

By the time the first Toulmin appears on the rolls, this ancient institution was

becoming anomalous or obsolete.  The original theory was that an apprentice who had

served his time should go through some procedure involving an oath and a payment to

be enrolled as "free", and this would give him the right to practice his trade, the

support of the "company" (eg Tailors or Weavers) involved, and perhaps other

privileges.  How it worked in practice varied much from town to town.  William

Stout's autobiography gives some illuminating pointers to the practice in Lancaster:

"The common freemen here ... engaged the aforesaid John Powell to go to London to

apply to the Earl of [Macclesfield] and his brother, in order to obtain a charter to

incorporat the common manufactores, butchers, etc., into companys exclusive from the

present charter of the present governing party.  Which the Earl and his brother,

considering their former usage here, espoused and solicited.  And the mayor and

council here, with the assistance of our then members of parlament, oposed at great

expense for some years; but at length they got a charter and put it in execution

here, whereby they would not permit any to follow a trade of manufactory or butcher

or gardener in the town or within three miles, exept they obtained the freedom of

some of their companys.  And such as would not comply were sued in [fictitious]

names and put to great costs.  And the ordnary tradsmen were grown so insolant and

idle that, like the dog in the maynger, they would neither worke themselvves nor

suffer others to work, by which many of them came to poverty and ruin of their

families. ... It cost me some money in the oposition, and [I] left off some smal

branches of trade [rather] than contend with them.  But in time sevral of them came

to see it did not affect [effect] what they proposed, or were tired, and others came

to poverty, that they let it drop so as to have no court or assembly about it."

(Stout, p. 101, about 1690-1)

This shows the theory, but also that in practice Stout was not too much affected

by not being a Freeman.  The same was true on another occasion: "About this time

this corporation [Lancaster] had a contest with Liverpoole about the toule of goods

we had from them, our town aledging that their charter exempted them from passage

toule all over this nation and Irland.  But for refusing it, our goods were taken

and kept.  But as I was no freeman of Lancaster, nor could be admited without an

oath, I released my goods; but my neighbours who were freeman commenced an action

against the persons who seized their goods, at their own and the Corporation's

charge, which was defended by the Corporation of Liverpoole, and some hundred pounds

spent on each side, without being determined." (Stout, p.96, about 1690).

Stout would not swear an oath, being a Quaker.  On this occasion, it sounds as if

he was rather the better off for not being a freeman!  Doubtless it varied from

trade to trade (Stout was a wholesale and retail grocer and ironmonger), and perhaps

there was a special advantage to weavers in being Freemen: 8 of the 18 Toulmins in

the roll are so described.  The next quotation suggests that it was important for

Stout's nephew (apprenticed to a draper) to become a freeman: "It being the custom

of this borrough [Lancaster] that the present mayor and baylifes have each a power

to give the freedom each one to whom they please, my nephew William Stout brought in

his father Leonard Stout a freeman.  Which he took the opertunety of in order to

qualifye him to bring his sone John in a freeman - who was apprintice at Kendall -

as a freeman's son for twenty shillings, otherways he could not have got his freedom

to begin his trade here under the most of twenty pounds."  (Stout, p.218, 1734: note

that a cow cost about £2 and a sheep 3s, according to the valuation of Richard

Toulmin, d.1681.)

This last quotation is  useful as it explains the strong tendency of Freemen to be

sons of Freemen. An editorial note (Stout, p.249) confirms this: "The Bailiff of the

Commons was with the Mayor responsible for appointing a Committee of four of the

Council to assess the fine payable by those wishing to become freemen of Lancaster

and not qualified as sons or apprentices of freemen."  Hence many entries in the

roll (12 out of 18 Toulmins) are of the form "X of ... son of Y"; I believe this

always implies that Y was a Freeman, and if the father is not mentioned it is almost

certain he was not.  Thus successive entries can enable us to construct a family

tree with considerable confidence.

Freemen were usually of Lancaster or neighbouring parishes by origin, but sons of

freemen often enrolled even if the family had moved as far away as Liverpool. The

rolls down to about 1830 have been printed (Record Soc. vol.90), and I have

consulted only these. Entries are listed by year, eg 1721-2, which for brevity I

quote as 1721.  The printed rolls include 18 Toulmins, from 1721 to 1830, and give

some vital information on the family.   Members were usually enrolled in their 20s,

or occasionally early 30s; one, William Toulmin, appears to have been enrolled at

16, which was unusual. (I've checked the date 1744-5 for him, and there seems no

doubt of his identity, and no evidence that he was born long before his baptism.

JMH points out that he could have been apprenticed as young as 10 and served his

term by 16.)

The following sequence is of particular interest: all these are marked * in App.C

family 3. Without it, the identification of Robert the weaver as son of William

would be uncertain, and William's father Robert had been mistakenly (but almost

inevitably) identified as Robert (b.1699) son of Richard in family 1 until the 1732

entry showed me he was the son of Joshua.

1732 Tolming, Robert of Bolton, son of Jos:a

1733 Tolming, Joshua, son of Jos:a of Bolton

1744 Toulming, William, son of Robert of Bolton

1767 Toulming, Thos. of Bolton, son of Robt.

1779 Tolming, Robert of Bolton by Sands, weaver, son of William

1801 Toulmin, Thos. of Burton in Lonsdale, weaver, son of Robert of Kirkby

         Lonsdale, weaver.

1801 Toulmin, James of Bentham, flaxdresser, son of William.

1830 Toulmin, Thos. of Bolton-le-Sands, weaver, son of Thomas of Burton in

         Lonsdale, weaver.

1830 Toulmin, John, of same, weaver, son of same.

1830 Toulmin, Robert, of same, weaver, son of same.

There are 8 more Toulmins in the roll who are harder to identify.

1721 Tollmin, Geo. of Lancaster, maltster

1744 Toulmin, Thomas, son of George of Bolton

are presumably father & son.  George b.1687 in App.C family 3 is a possibility, but

nothing is known of his marriage or children; and we would expect him to have been

listed as "son of Jos:a" like his brothers.  There is also the eldest son of Thomas

of the Mill, in family 2, George b.1695, who did have a son Thomas b.1730, d.

1753, who seems too young to fit (but cf. William, also enrolled in 1744, aged 16).

1727 Tolminge, John of Lancaster, saddler

is certainly identical to a John Toulmin of Lancaster, saddler, who m.

Margaret Taylor of Bulk in 1729, and whom I have tentatively identified as a

younger brother (b.1707) of George of the Mill (App.C, family 2). There is a

curious cluster of three more weavers:

1732 Tolmin, Thomas of Bolton, weaver

Possibly another younger brother of George of the Mill, b.1701, about whom we know

little.  It would be rather attractive to make these three Freemen brothers.

1729 Tolming, Thomas of Preston, weaver

1744 Toulming, Henry of Preston, weaver

See comments in section 5c (Preston).  Finally, there are two Freemen from

Liverpool, presumably originating from the Lancaster area:

1801 Toulmin, Robert of Liverpool, cabinet-maker

1817 Toulmin, Richd. of Liverpool, broker's clerk, son of Robt. of same,

       cabinet-maker.

These I think can be identified: see comments in section 5c (Liverpool).

Miss C.M.Toulmin, "Times", 2 Dec 1970 (?Lond*13215629)

4e. OTHER WILLS

There were "300 or so" probate courts (FitzHugh s.v. "Will") where records before

1858 may be found.  I looked at some printed indexes and noted a number of Toleman,

Tolman etc wills in the Taunton index; JMH has checked, and supplied the following

list of these (quoting BRS xlv, Taunton Wills 1537-1799), to which I've added three

PCC wills (marked *) already included under 4c above.

Note also section 5d, Bridport etc, below.  This branch of the family seems

consistently to have spelt the name -man and never to have used the Tou-, Tow-

variants, though the pronunciation of the first syllable was probably the same; note

"Toalman", 1727.  JMH notes "Court Rolls of manor of Crandon cum Puriton (printed)

give Tollman/Tolman as "Tenentes", 1674-77".

Section 5. Geographical review, UK

In this section I have combined a review of Toulmins associated with various

localities (with references to places where details can be found), and quotations of

data which did not fit in conveniently elsewhere.  These are the locations covered:

5a. North Lancashire

 Bolton-le-Sands

 Cockerham

 Halton and Aughton

 Lancaster

 Melling

Morecambe (= Poulton-le-Sands, Bare, and Torrisholme)

 Slyne with Hest etc

 Warton and Carnforth area

 Whittington

5b. Westmoreland and W. Yorkshire

 Beetham

 Bentham, Yorks

 Ingleton, Yorks

 Kendal (including Burton-in-Kendal and Holme)

 Kirkby Lonsdale

5c. Central and South Lancashire

 Manchester area

 Preston

5d. London and elsewhere

 Tyneside, Darlington, etc

 Ware and Braughing, Herts.

5a. NORTH LANCASHIRE

 Bolton-le-Sands

All the Toulmins of families 1-3 in App.C seem to have died or left Bolton by the

time Abraham was bur. there in 1800. But Thos., John, and Robert Toulmin, weavers,

were described as "of Bolton-l-S" in 1830 (3e above), so perhaps this family moved

back there from Bentham in the 1820s: at the end of section 1b above there are 3

births that could be attributed to it.  However, I've checked census records for

Bolton-l-S in 1841 (HO107/528/10 ff.5-23, 11 ff.4-9, 12 ff.5-20, 13 ff.4-10) and

1851 (HO107/2272 ff1-22, 2273 ff.220-241) without finding any Toulmins.

 Cockerham

  Two marriages (Boyd):

1801  Mgt Tolman    m. Jn Bradshaw [probably *2]

1826  Betty Toulmin m. Jas Bleazard

 Halton and Aughton

Jeneta, dau. of John Toulmin of Slyne, was bap. "at Halton" in 1647 (section 1a,

and App.C family 5).  Otherwise, almost all the Toulmin references in this PR (LPRS

44, 126) can be placed as family 1a of App.C. But "Richard Toulmin, Torrisholme, age

53" bur 6 Feb 1825 seems to have come from Kirkby Lonsdale (see under 5b and App.C

family 1b).  Thomas b.1814 in App.C family 3 (Lond**13333125), who was one of the

weavers at Bolton-l-S in 1830, was at Force Bank, Halton in 1836, but at Clawthrop

nr Burton-in-Kendal in 1838.

 Lancaster

There is a batch of entries in the Lancaster PR from 1605 to 1620 (section 1a

above), which could all arise from a single family, the children of William who d.

1620 (excluding Margaret, from Bolton, who m. George Rigg in 1611); and we might

speculate further that William could have been a brother of Robert at the head of

family 1 and Richard at the head of family 3.  Thereafter Toulmins seem to have come

and gone, but never to have settled for more than a generation until Robert and

Nancy (see below).

John Toulmin b.1707 at Bolton-l-S (App.C family 3) settled in Lancaster as a

saddler: see under Lond**1315.

William 1729-1800 in App.C family 3 (Lond**13333) was "of Lancaster" when Ellin

was bap. in 1757, but only for a few years.  His great-grandson Robert b.1806

(Lond**13333122) settled in Lancaster with his second wife Nancy, about 1849, and

descendants of his are living there still.

John Toulmin (*) was m. at Lancaster in 1776 and his first 5 children baptised

there.

I note also that Robert Toulmin, cabinet-maker of Liverpool, and his son Richard

Toulmin, brokers clerk of Liverpool, were Freemen of Lancaster (see section 3e).

Perhaps connected with Thomas b.1757 in family 1a, carpenter of Lancaster 1790-1801,

then wheelwright of Liverpool, whose son (Lond***31114123) was indentured in

Lancaster.  See section 5c (Liverpool).

MI Lancaster: "Robert Toulmin of Lancaster, Skinner, d. 26 Dec 1826 aged 52.  Mary

wife of John Leeming his dau. d. 20 Jan 1854 aged 52" (Chetham lix.748).  For his

will, see section 4a.  This is certainly Robert (son of Simon) from Kirkby

Lonsdale: see section 5b and App.C family 1b. Robert Toulmin Leeming, section

5b (Kendal), must have been his grandson.

Apprentices: Lancaster City Reference Library have Apprentice Books, from 1736, on

microfilm and a register of names: they report that the only one remotely like

Toulmin is

Robert Tolmin, batch., Lancs., bound 8.5.1747 for 7 yrs to James Fenton,

  Dr of Laws.

See under Lond**13151.  Robert b.1734 (family 1, son of Richard Toulmin and Margaret

Beckett, Lond***311138), about whom we know practically nothing, and his cousin

Robert 1731-1776 (family 1b, barber at K.Lonsdale, Lond***311175) are less likely

possibilities.

Town spinster; wit. Thomas Camm, David J Moore.

[Date needs re-checking, as Boyd has 1797. Possibly Elizabeth b.1764 in family 3

(Lond**133334), but there is no reason to think she was living in Lancaster at

either date.]

Some of the above probably refer to the Morecambe area, where there were Toulmins

(see below), as it was included in the Lancaster registration district.

 Melling

Boyd & IGI record a marriage, with some discrepancies:

1777 Robt    Toulmen m. Eliz.     Waller, Melling  [Boyd]

21 Aug 1777 Richard Toulmen m. Elizabeth Walker, Melling  [IGI]

The correct version is

Robert Toulmin of the Parish of Bolton Weaver & Elizabeth Waller Spinster of

this Parish were married Banns April the 21st [1777] (Melling BT, Lancs.RO

   MF2/109).

See App.C, family 3 (note [h]), and Lond**133331.

Morecambe (= Poulton-le-Sands, Bare, and Torrisholme)

Poulton was a township of Lancaster parish, with its own chapel.  Records date

from 1746 (BT, Lancs.RO DRB 2/138, 138a).  Morecambe was formed only much later.

WLJ provided the following from the PR (Holy Trinity, Morecambe):

 * All these entries belong to the family of William Toulmin and Elizabeth Aldren,

described at length below.  "1868 Jul 17 Mathew" seems to be an error for 1865:

see the birth cert. there.

$ John Walling Toulmin, from App.C family 1a, and Hannah Lodge moved from Halton to

Torrisholme and then Bare; for details see under Lond***31114151.  Joseph who m.

Jane Horne & d. 1868 was their son; Lucy and Mary Jane were probably dau. of Joseph

and Jane.

Note also Richard Toulmin of Torrisholme, bur. Halton 1825 (see under Halton in

this section). Some of the unidentified GRO entries quoted under Lancaster, above,

probably also refer to the Morecambe area.  There are still numerous Toulmins in the

Morecambe & Lancaster area: see App.G.

The family of William Toulmin and Elizabeth Aldren

It is not at present clear where William came from; the 1851 and 1861 census

returns are contradictory (see below); the later is not necessarily more reliable,

and there is no record of his baptism at either Middleton or Bentham.  Nevertheless,

I think it is possible he was a son of William b.1797 in App.C family 3

(Lond**1333317). Records cited below consistently indicate he was b. in 1820 or late

1819.  The history below also indicates a connection with Bolton-l-S, so it is

possible he was born there; just possibly he was Lond**13333161.  Otherwise, the

first record of him is at Middleton in the 1841 census (PRO HO107/554/13 f.7), where

he was aged 20-24 and a Male Servant to a Farmer (Thomas Birkett, 60): there were 3

others in the household, probably all farm labourers, and 2 Female Servants.  I

found no other Toulmins in Middleton or Overton in that census, and none at all

there or in Heysham in 1851 (when William was in Lancaster, see below).  From his

marriage in 1848 onwards, quite a detailed history can be reconstructed:

The Parochial chapel of Overton                                     Heaton        Lancaster

33  21 Oct 1848  William Toulmin         28   Bach  Labourer        Middleton                William Toulmin, Labourer

Elizabeth Aldren        22   Spin                  Middleton                Thomas Burrow, Labourer

Elizabeth Aldren and Alice Wilson signed with marks.  (Elizabeth was b. 20 Feb, bap.

16 Mar 1826, Overton, as illegitimate dau. of Margaret Aldren of Middleton - per WLJ

12.12.92.)  Their eldest son John was bap. at Overton 17 Dec 1848 (per WJW), but the

family seem to have moved to Lancaster shortly afterwards:

They were still there at the 1851 census:

and in 1853 when another daughter was born:

                                                                                         Church St Lancaster

By the 1861 census they had moved to Poulton (per WLJ, who informs me that Taylor

St is now Euston Rd, Morecambe):

7  April 1861 175 Taylor St, Poulton-le-Sands                (per WLJ)

Thomas    "                 "             Unm        1m                                            "

WLJ also notes the baptism of the two younger sons, at Bare (Holy Trinity):

1858   Sep 26   James, son of William & Elizabeth Toulmin, labourer, Poulton

1860   May 27   Thomas, son of William & Elizabeth Toulmin, labourer, Poulton

                 (b. Lancaster Jan-Mar 1860, GRO).

Hard times followed (Lancs.RO, QSP 3721/2, QSP 3733/5-7). In spring 1855, the

couple had gone [presumably from Lancaster] to reside in Heysham, and at the end of

July 1858 moved to Poulton. They had required no "relief" for upwards of 5 years,

until 3 Nov 1860 when William being sick was temporarily relieved by Poulton; this

continued until Mar 1861 when his sickness was pronounced permanent [so perhaps

Elizabeth dealt with the Census return?], and Bolton le Sands [apparently "last

legal place of Settlement" of both] took over the relief of the family.

(Surprisingly, William was described as 'tailor' when a daughter m. in 1877 - see

note [g] after the tree below.)

   He died in 1863:

Lancaster   Heaton        Lancaster

279 22 Jan 1863      William Toulmin 43  Agricultural         Diabetis, certified   x mark of Ann Ayres,    24 Jan1863

    Poulton                                                                         Pilling Houses, Poulton

[Perhaps 'Pilling Houses' were almshouses or the like. The family remained there for some years.]

After his death Poulton again relieved Elizabeth and her children. She could not

be "removed" within a year, but on 24 Dec 1864 an order was made to remove Elizabeth

Toulmin Widow and her children Sarah Ann (13), Elizabeth (10), Mary Jane (8), James

(6), Thomas (5) from Poulton to Bolton-l-S. [At this stage, John, aged 15 or 16, was

doubtless considered independent.]  Bolton appealed and the order was quashed.

Shortly after, Elizabeth had an illegitimate child, who d. aged 1 month:

Hadwen's, in Pilling St (now Back Pedder St, per WLJ).  Although the father is not

named on the birth registration, he was surely Tobias Hadwen, the informant, who

married Elizabeth in 1867: his father was Matthew.
